School Driving

When you decide to learn to drive, the first thing you need to do is apply for a provisional driving license. You must have passed your 17th birthday before you can start driving with a provisional license, but you can apply for one up to two months before this.

How to Apply

If you have a passport and a credit or debit card, you may be able to apply online. Or you can get an application form from your local post office to complete and send to DTMR. You will also need to send the fee and proof of identity.

If you have a Brisbane digital passport, you just supply the digit number so that the DTMR can check it and use your passport photo. Otherwise, you need to include original documents proving your identity, plus a passport-style color photograph.

Driving Instructor

Rules for Provisional License Holders

When you have received your license, and have passed your 17th birthday, you can drive with L plates on the car, as long as you are supervised by someone who has had a full Brisbane driving license for over three years. And of course, you must be properly insured. The easiest way to comply is to take a course of lessons with an approved driving instructor. If you have an insured and L-plated car, and a willing and qualified driver to go with you, you might want to practice between lessons, once you have enough confidence and your instructor believes you are ready.

Helpful Publications

No-one should try to learn to drive without reading the Highway Code book, which was revised and updated in 2007. While the Department for Transport has made an online version available, you would be wise to purchase a printed copy to study. You might also like to refer to a copy of the Know Your Traffic Signs booklet to supplement the information in the Highway Code. Finally, reading the Driving Standards Agency’s Official Guide to Learning to Drive means you will know what key skills your instructor will be teaching you and what standards you will have to reach before you take your practical test.
